The City Library

The City Library

The City Library in Stockholm was designed by the famed Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund and is today one of Stockholms most recognisable structures, (the eagle-eyed of you may even notice is finds its way into the fabric used on the Tunnelbana seats) opened in 1928 and built in style called Swedish Grace.

It’s worth noting from an architectural standpoint that Asplund reduced the elements of the classical order right down to their very most abstract geometrical forms and thus eliminating architectural decor.

Located in the Odenplan area of Stockholm this library has been listed as one of the world's most beautiful libraries by the magazine Conde Nast Traveler. But it’s whats inside that counts the most, the rotunda opens up a magnificent space and showcases to the public the concept of open shelves where visitors could access books without the need to ask library staff for assistance, a first in Sweden.
